Marijuana retail shops open in USA

                                              

Almost 38 years after Jamaica’s reggae star, Peter Tosh, popularised the legalisation of marijuana in his hit track, ‘legalize it, an American state, Colorado, has lifted prohibitions on its consumption.
Retail stores selling marijuana opened for business in the state Wednesday, putting the western state in the vanguard of the country’s evolving attitudes on legalizing the drug.
Officials in the state famous for its ski resorts and breathtaking mountain vistas have issued 348 retail marijuana licenses — including for small shops — that allow for the selling of up to 28 grams of pot to people aged 21 or older starting January 1.

Washington state on the US Pacific coast will follow Colorado several months from now, when it also allows stores to begin selling cannabis.
Both states legalized recreational consumption of marijuana in referendums held in November last year, but the new rules coming into force allow cannabis shops.
State officials here anticipate that marijuana sales will generate some $67 million in annual tax revenue.
Colorado’s branch of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) said everyone will benefit.

Monarch, 21 prisoners get state pardon, amnesty

                                          
Oba Gabriel Adepoju Adeyemo of Oko-Ile of Ogbomoso in Oyo State, western Nigeria was among the four convicts serving life jail terms at Agodi Prison granted state pardon by Governor Abiola Ajimobi on New Years’s day.
The other lifers are: Isaac Ogunniyi, Gabriel Ojetayo and Lukman Ajibola.
Oba Adeyemo was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2011 over a murder charge after someone was killed in a clash that occurred in a motor park close to his palace in his town.
Though the monarch claimed innocence of the charge against him but the court found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Also, 12 convicts who are on various terms of imprisonment for misdemeanors were granted total release and State pardon by the governor.
The convicts are: Wasiu Rasheed, Ajayi Akeem, Lati Balogun, Bisiriyu Olalekan, Joke Sunday, Kazeem Oladeji, Okunola Mathew, Tijani Ganiyu, Saheed Sikiru, Segun Amao, Rasheed Taiwo and Ademola Aloba.
Equally, the governor granted amnesty to five condemned prisoners who are: Bashiru Popoola, Mukaila Salawu, Obinna John, Idowu Emmanuel and Wahab Alao.

Ex-Pakistani President Musharraf hospitalized just before his trial

                                            

Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, who was due to arrive at an Islamabad court Thursday for his trial, has been hospitalized after falling ill, his lawyer told CNN.

Musharraf was hospitalized on his doctor’s orders, lawyer Ahmad Raza Kasuri said.

He faces life in prison or the death penalty for suspending the constitution and imposing emergency rule in 2007.

New Year's Twin Babies Born in Separate Years

                
As people around the world partied their way into the new year, two mothers gave birth to two of the last babies of 2013 and two of the first babies of 2014. While born just minutes apart, their twin babies entered the world in two different years.
On Dec. 31, 2013, at 11:58 p.m., Yaleni Santos Tohalino gave birth to baby girl Lorraine Yaleni Begazo, who weighed at 6 pounds, 4.9 ounces, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, D.C.
Soon after, her twin brother Brandon Ferdinando Begazo was born on Jan. 1, 2014, at 12:01 a.m., weighing at 5 pounds, 10.4 ounces.

"I feel wonderful full of joy and happiness and a full sense of realization," the twins' father, Warren Begazo, told ABCNews.com. "This is her first children ever, and they're beautiful and she's really happy."
In Toronto, two fraternal twin sisters were also born in 2013 and in 2014, respectively. At Trillium Health Partners-Credit Valley Hospital, older sister Gabriela Salgueiro was born on Dec. 31, 2013, at 11:52 p.m., weighing 6 pounds, 16 ounces.

James Avery, Uncle Phil on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, dead at 65

      

James Avery, the character actor who laid down the law as the Philip Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has died.
Avery's publicist, Cynthia Snyder, told The Associated Press that Avery died Tuesday in Glendale, Calif., following complications from open heart surgery. He was 65.
Avery played Will Smith's uncle on the popular TV series. His movie credits included Fletch, The Prince of Egypt and 8 Million Ways to Die.
"I'm deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away," tweeted actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton on Fresh Prince. "He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly."

Thousands march in Hong Kong in escalating battle for democracy

        
Thousands protested in Hong Kong on Wednesday pressing China to allow full democracy in the city as a battle intensifies over Beijing's attempts to control the outcome of a planned direct election for the city's leader in 2017.
Beijing had promised direct elections in the former British colony as the goal for 2017, but the devil is in the details of the rules governing who can run.
Pressure has been building between democratic forces in the financial hub, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997, and China's stability-obsessed Communist Party leaders who fear a rival democrat being voted into office.

Protesters at the annual New Year's Day democracy rally shouted slogans demanding full democracy in 2017, with a key condition being the open nominations of candidates so that anyone, including China critics, can run for office.
But Chinese officials and leftist newspapers have rejected that, citing the city's mini-constitution that states all nominees must be endorsed by a 1,200-strong election committee, which is stacked with Beijing loyalists.
"There's more and more interference (from Beijing)," said Tsang Fan-yu, a designer who was at Wednesday's protest with his seven-year-old son for their sixth consecutive year.
"We have to come out to make our voices heard. The form of democracy Beijing wants is unacceptable. It's fake."

Michael Schumacher lost control of his skis after hitting a boulder and was sent flying into three other rocks, it was claimed today.
The Formula One legend was 'catapulted' headfirst with such force that it broke his helmet in two.
In a new picture released today, bloodstains can be seen in the snow at the spot where the former F1 ace smashed his head.
It also apparently shows the rocks which the seven-time champion struck in the French resort of Meribel on Sunday, leaving him with devastating brain injuries.

According to the first ski patrol paramedic on the scene, Schumacher hit a boulder which was concealed by snow that had fallen the night before and then struck three more rocks.
The French national, who asked not to be named, said: ‘We arrived within two minutes of the accident. The man lost control after hitting a rock that was lightly covered with snow....

Police May Use Reflections In Digital Photos To Catch Child Abusers - Research From UK Universities,

Reflections from the eyes of child sex abuse victims in digital photographs could be used by police to catch paedophiles.
According to new research from two UK universities, the images of people reflected in the victim's eye can be identified with the help of advanced camera technology.
The eye's pupil acts like a mirror in which the images of people standing behind the photographer are caught.

The breakthrough means that unseen bystanders who witnessed a crime could now be identified once the high-resolution photographs are magnified.
Psychologists at the University of York and the University of Glasgow were able to extract such images and zoom in on them so that the subjects could be identified by third parties.

Mourinho okays Essien's Chelsea exit

              

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has agreed for Michael Essien to leave the English club and Italy could be the next destination for the Ghana international.

Even though no Serie A club has made contact with Essien his agent Fabian Piveteau will not rule out a move to the Italian top-flight if an interest is expressed.

The Ghana midfielder spent last season on loan with José Mourinho at Real Madrid, but has managed just three Premier League appearances this term.

The 31-year-old has been omitted from Chelsea's Champions League squad so far this season.

His agent Fabian Piveteau says Mourinho has agreed for Essien to leave the club and has not ruled out a move to one of Italy's biggest clubs.

Mr. Dokubo-Asari says those opposing the president are wasting their time as the 2015 presidential election is a foregone conclusion. He explains that Mr. Jonathan is only waiting to be sworn in... Hehehe, I just like this man .

The President of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, NDPVF, Muhajid Asari-Dokubo told PREMIUM TIMES in an interview (conducted before his recent arrest in Benin Republic) that nothing would stop President Goodluck Jonathan from winning the 2015 presidential election. He also explains why he is working on a “tsunami” with Hamza Al-Mustapha and other ethnic warlords.

There were reports recently quoting you as saying there will be bloodshed in the country. Do you really make that statement?

Yes, I did. If you look at the attacks that have been directed at Goodluck since it became apparent that he was going to become president since 2010, certain individuals especially the Ciromas, Lawal Kaita, General Muhammadu Buhari, General Ibrahim Babangida, have also made several statements that if President Goodluck Jonathan become president they will make sure that he fails. I quote: Lawal Kaita said ‘It is the turn of the north to produce the president, that if Jonathan by default wins the nomination of the PDP, we will stop him at the general elections. If we fail to stop him at the general election, even if he wins he will not be able to rule we will make the country ungovernable for him.’ Goodluck Jonathan comes from a place. Nobody has a monopoly of violence.

Former US first lady, Barbara Bush hospitalized

                                               

Former US first lady Barbara Bush has been hospitalized in Houston, Texas, for treatment of a “respiratory-related issue,” a family spokesman said Tuesday.

Bush, 88, was admitted Monday at Methodist Hospital, spokesman Jim McGrath said in a written statement.

“She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care,” the statement said. “Updates will be issued when warranted.”

CNN was first alerted to Bush’s hospitalization by tweets from affiliate KPRC.

Her husband, George H.W. Bush, was the 41st President of the United States. He also served as vice president for two terms under President Ronald Reagan

I know the things that I need God to do for me and my family! I also know that I need answers and direction from God. Most importantly I know that it is time to stop wasting my time and face my calling regardless of what people will say or think.
