The
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Friday said that it had
publicly destroyed 10, 488.61kg of illegal drugs, valued at about N222
million, which were seized in Kano State.
Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, the agency’s spokesman, said this via a statement in Lagos.
Ofoyeju said that the Chairman of NDLEA,
Mr Ahmadu Giade, led officials in carrying out the drugs’ destruction,
which was witnessed by some dignitaries, including Gov. Rabiu Kwankwaso
of Kano State.
He said that the destruction procedure
was in line with a Federal High Court order instructing the agency to
always destroy confiscated drugs in public.
“Cannabis has the largest chunk of the drugs with 9,906.859kg. Psychotropic substance is 570.936kg, heroin 0.0268 grammes, methamphetamine 7.54kg, while cocaine is 3kg.
“The agency also secured 377 convictions with respect to the seized drugs,’’ he added.
Ofoyeju said that the NDLEA had vowed to incapacitate drug trafficking cartels by permanently ridding the society of narcotics.
“NDLEA remains committed to dismantling drug trafficking syndicates.
“We shall continue to cut off drug
supply to addicts and keep our society safe and secure by publicly
destroying confiscated drugs.
“The prosecution of drug traffickers and
prompt forfeiture of ill-gotten drug proceeds shall also be vigorously
pursued,’’ he said.
