It is proving to be a very unhappy Christmas for Iraqi Christians.
The community found itself under attack twice on Christmas Day.
In one incident a car bomb detonated near a church after the morning service in the southern Baghdad suburb of Doura, killing at least 24 people.
Two bombs also went off in a crowded market in the same mainly Christian suburb killing another 10 people.
Christians may be being targeted more since the majority Shi’ite community began to side with them, believing them both to be victims of the government’s sectarian policies, and al-Qaeda attacks.
Iraq’s Shi’ites say they are being persecuted by the minority Sunnis. If Iraq’s Christians are now being seen in the Shi’ite camp, more attacks may follow. One of Iraq’s most powerful Shi’ite clerics, Ammar al-Hakim, attended a midnight mass this year in solidarity.
