A former Special Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Political Affairs, Chief Akin Osuntokun, has declared that the decision by President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2015 presidential election is within the ambit of the constitution.
Fielding questions from journalists at his country home, Okemesi-Ekiti,
yesterday at the first anniversary of the death of his mother, Mrs.
Hannah Folorunsho Osuntokun, the former Obasanjo's aide said Jonathan,
based on the constitution, has every right to seek a second term in
office.
While decrying the heating up of the polity by some politicians because
of personal interest, Osuntokun pointed out that the current insecurity
rocking the country was an offshoot of the 2015 presidential election.
According to him, by arrangement, every zone has the right to occupy the position for two terms of eight years.

Osuntokun, who disagreed with Obasanajo and some other Nigerians on
some recent events and utterances, cautioned Nigerian politicians
against taking hardline postures on certain issues, especially those
which the end result have the tendency of either making or marring the
future of the country.
He warned some unnamed leaders of the country against their negative
actions, saying they would be judged by the amount of confusion and
crises they generate in the land.
The former aide advised that those calling for one unattainable solution or the other to the country’s myriad of problems must be cautious, stressing that controversial and volatile issues should always be avoided so as not to jeopardise the nation’s fledging democracy.

Osuntokun maintained that the ongoing conflicts and disagreements
between the political parties or individuals were usually the hallmarks
of democracy that must sustain.
In his opinion, what the present administration deserved very badly was
fervent prayers from all Nigerians, in order to sustain the tempo of
its current performance so that the country can move forward. He, however, called on Jonathan to also thread softly and also begin process of reviewing, what he called his “God given assignment of rehabilitation and reconciliation of the country.”
