Students Are Been Suspended For Lacking up-to-date Immunization Records in Ottawa
More than 500 elementary school students in Ottawa's two French-language school boards have been suspended for lacking current immunization records, the city's public health agency says.
Suspensions were issued Wednesday for approximately 535 students, according to Donna Casey, spokesperson for Ottawa Public Health (OPH).
Children are required to have shots for nine diseases or risk suspensions.
Wednesday's suspensions come after OPH sent roughly 1,500 "final notice of suspension" letters between Dec. 31 and Jan. 7 to parents with students at the two boards.

Business is booming for an Ottawa area entrepreneur who founded a company after he lost his ability to speak.
Garry Brownrigg, founder of Ottawa startup QuickSilk, was forced to face a new reality after waking up one morning in 1984 to find that his voice was completely gone.
An immediate investigation into the cause of Brownrigg’s condition determined that he was suffering from Laryngeal Dystonia, a disorder that causes involuntary spasms and movement of the muscles that control the larnyx. In Browrigg’s case, the condition was so severe that doctors told him he may never be able to speak again.
The news put Brownrigg’s plans for a promising career in financial services on hold. But, with a family at home, he needed to work. So, Brownrigg started a variety of manual labour jobs, while picking up computer and coding skills in his spare time. He took online courses and even graduated with a Masters degree from Boise State University.
His ability to code caught the attention of one of Ottawa’s early technology successes, JetForm, who brought him in to work on the company’s online presence. JetForm was a global leader in creating automated forms for corporations, which allowed people to fill out applications and place orders online. The company is perhaps best known for being the name sponsor on the city’s baseball stadium on Coventry Road, which was known as “JetForm Park” between 1998 and 2003.
While with the company he communicated with co-workers through email. Brownrigg joined the firm when it had around 60 employees. He left when it had more than 800.
JetForm, which eventually renamed itself Accelio, was acquired in a deal that brought software giant Adobe Corp. to Ottawa in 2002 for $114.5 million in shares.
While Brownrigg worked with JetForm, he began to build his own company that would help organizations more easily push content out to their websites without needing to access back-end systems and update multiple pages. It was a bit like Brownrigg was making communication easier for website administrators. After years of sending text messages and emails as his primary medium of communicating with the world, making communication easier was an area where Brownrigg had become a bit of an expert.
The idea began to take off. Some federal government departments began inquiring about the firm’s services.
Ghanaian workers forced to apologise to Chinese manager’s dog
Some Ghanaian workers of the Ghana Household Utilities Manufacturing Company Limited (GHUMCO) in Takoradi in the Western region have accused the factory manager Mr. Zhu and other Chinese managers of trampling on their human rights by forcing them to apologize to their dogs.
According to the workers, most of them have suffered dog bites at the premises of the company without any medical treatment or protection from the company.
The aggrieved workers who spoke to Empire News said strangely any worker who complains of dog bite is forced to write an apology letter to the dog or will be dismissed.

The patient, who has only been identified by her surname, Chen, went to sleep with nausea and ringing in her ears but woke up to find she was unable to hear her boyfriend. Ms Chen, from the city Xiamen, on the east coast of China, went straight to the hospital when she woke up and her condition left doctors confused.
Doctors tried to figure out her bizarre symptoms, which were the opposite to more common forms of hearing loss, according to local reports. What was more surprising was that she could hear the voice of women, but not that of men.
A specialist diagnosed her with reverse-slope hearing loss, in which she could only hear high frequencies.
The condition is believed to affect only one in nearly 13,000 patients with hearing problems, according to figures.
It was possible that stress may have contributed to the condition, the doctors said.

A Nigerian man living in Queensland, Australia has been arrested and charged after allegedly posing as a United States soldier online and forming a romantic relationship with a 34-year-old woman who sent him $370,000 all in the name of love.
Cosmos Emeh, 32, appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday, where it was revealed he had also been accused of trying to get the victim to send him a further $170,000 before officers swooped and arrested him at his Durack home on Thursday.
Mr Emeh, who is in Australia on a student visa, allegedly received the money over the course of three months from the 34-year-old Brisbane woman, who later contacted police and sparked the investigation.
