The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has commenced the distribution of fishing nets and other agricultural inputs worth millions of naira to local fishermen in Bayelsa State.
Vanguard gathered that a total of 4,000 fishermen from across the eight local government areas of the state would benefit from the scheme.
The Director of Agriculture in the state, Mr. Francis Umokoro, told Vanguard, on Thursday, that the gesture was aimed at boosting fish production as well as help improve the income of the local fishermen.
Thanking the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Adewunmi Adesina for the gesture, Mr. Umokoro, said his office had intimated the parent ministry on the need to send more fishing gears to the predominantly riverine state, since majority of the rural folks were fishermen.
He said “Though 1,000 bundles of high quality fishing nets and other inputs were sent to the state by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the quantity is grossly inadequate given the large fishing population in Bayelsa.
“Everybody is a fisherman here. Since the commencement of the distribution exercise, they have been coming in droves and we have sent request for additional supply.”
